Keystrokes ran the Race for Life
Keystrokes team gets sore feet helping to fund cancer research
More than one in three of us will develop cancer in their lives. Many of us have lost someone to it. We all want cures to be found. Cancer Research UK is the leading independent funder of cancer research in Europe, but gets very little Government funding. They are almost entirely dependent on public fundraising, organising an increasing number of events all over the UK. Like many people the staff at Knaresborough based learning and development company Keystrokes were obviously keen to play an active part in this fundraising.
Carol Pack, Project manager at Keystrokes explained:
We wanted to show our support for such a worthy cause by taking part in a fund raising event that would really make a difference. The Race for Life has so far raised over £100 million for cancer research, and we wanted to contribute to this by entering a team. Cancer has affected the lives of people close to all of us and we all wanted to run in memory or in celebration of friends and family members.
First ran in 1994 in Battersea Park, London. The Race for Life has now grown to become the UKs biggest women-only fundraising event. For 2006 there are over 200 events taking place across the UK from Aberdeen to Truro, aiming to raise some £46 million for cancer research.
Keystrokes entered a team of 6 women, some of whom had never done any running before, into the 5Km event at Temple Newsham in Leeds. They then approached their friends and customers with the aim of raising £500 for the run. After a thorough training programme to ensure that they would be able to successfully complete the course, the Keystrokes team arrived at Temple Newsham, bright and early and raring to go on Sunday July 2. Carol Pack takes up the story:
It was a hot and steamy day but we were undaunted by the conditions and all completed the course. No world record times, though - it was too hot and much too hilly for that! Next time we're going to look for a nice flat course, and avoid July if we can!
Such was the level of support from friends and customers that the original fundraising target of £500 was exceeded by 50%, raising a total of £750. Although they are delighted with the support they have received, the Keystrokes team is refusing to comment on whether they are going to run the 10Km event scheduled for Harewood house in September!
Carol Pack concluded:
We need to let the blisters heal from the 5Km run before we consider our next effort. But we would like to thank everybody who sponsored us for the event, their support made all the exertions worthwhile.
